Jeremy Bartels
appointed construction and truck equipment sales representative
for J&J Truck Equipment and Lincoln Supply & Equipment,
divisions of Somerset Welding & Steel, Somerset, PA. Bartels
will cover central Pennsylvania and parts of Maryland and West
Virginia and will be responsible for increasing sales and
providing product support and service to existing and new
customers.
Bryan J. McConnell,
P.G. joins Skelly and Loy’s Monroeville, PA, office as waste
management services leader, and will be responsible for managing
and providing technical and contractual oversight for all waste
management-related tasks performed from Monroeville. McConnell
is a registered professional geologist with more than 20 years
experience in the professional environmental management field.
His special ties include project management, soil and
groundwater remedial investigations and feasibility studies,
design and implementation of soil and groundwater remediation
programs, risk-based closure of hazardous waste and petroleum
release sites, regulatory-driven environmental compliance audits
and inspections, multi-media permitting and
negotiating/facilitating, and regulatory policy management.
Ruth Bailey
named director general of the Association of British Mining
Equipment Companies, a government-accredited organization
representing more than 30 companies in Wakefield West Yorkshire,
succeeding Philip Deakin, who had been a member of the
association for 30 years and its director general for the past
12 years. The association members export high tech mining
equipment and technology to more than a dozen countries. Bailey
is the first woman to head up the association.
Dan Timco
promoted to the newly created position of global director of
operational excellence for Industrial Scientific Corporation,
Pittsburgh, PA, responsible for leading the company’s global
efforts to achieve business excellence. He will work to
integrate best practices including lean manufacturing. Six
Sigma and Design for Six Sigma to improve all areas of
operations.
Charles R. Reeves, Jr.,
PE has joined Engineering
Consulting Services, Inc., Lexington, KY, as director of
engineering services, Midwest region. He will head up a new
office for ECSI to be located in Western Kentucky. ECSI offers
civil, environmental, and mining engineer; land surveying; and
health and safety training.
Jie “Jay” Li
named vice president of business development-China, Peabody
Energy, St. Louis, MO, responsible for expanding Peabody’s
business development activities in China, Mongolia and other
neighboring countries. Li has more than 20 years of experience
managing international and energy generation operations in
China, southern Asia and the United States, including
coal-fueled, gas and hydropower energy plants. Li joined
Peabody in July 2005.
James T. France,
CPA, has joined the engineering and environmental consulting
firm of Skelly and Loy as chief financial officer. France will
direct all of the financial functions and will oversee human
resources for Skelly and Loy’s five Mid-Atlantic offices. He is
responsible for strategic planning, budgeting, risk management,
project control, cash management, banking relations, and overall
financial direction. He will also provide financial data and
feasibility analyses to clients.
J. Brett Harvey,
CONSOL Energy president and CEO, was recently honored with the
University of Utah Alumni Association 2008 Distinguished Alumni
Award, recognizing his commitment to implementing a new
industry-wide mine safety approach that aims to reduce accident
rates to zero at every mine in the nation. Harvey, who
graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1977, is a
fourth-generation coal miner and a native of Utah. ((Utah
Alumni Awards).
Edgar J. Chavez
named director of marketing for North America by New Holland
Construction and Kobelco Construction Machinery America, Carol
Stream, IL. Chavez will be responsible for all North American
marketing strategies and activities for the New Holland
Construction and Kobelco Brands. With nearly 20 years of
industry experience, Chavez’s career includes experience with
Astec Industries, Mitsubishi International and Volvo
Construction equipment.
Ian Craig,
former group vice-president and managing director of Australian
operations for Peabody Energy, has joined the Mining Industry
Skills Center as its new chairman, following his retirement in
February. He has more than 30 years experience in both
Australian and international resources sector.
Paul Jury,
managing director of Resource Pacific, has left the company and
sold his stake when Xstrata took more than 50% control of the
company.

Lisa Lefkovitz
has joined the Waterfront Group, ARCADIS, Beverly, MA, as senior
scientist. Lefkovitz will be working to advance ARCADIS’
relationship and services with the Corp of Engineers, and
provide strong technical leadership to the company’s industrial
clients in the area of dredged material assessment and
management. Lefkovitz is an environmental chemist with more than
20 years experience in the design and management of chemical and
biological evaluations of sediments and dredged materials and
the fate and transport of organic and inorganic contaminants in
the environment.
Roe-Hoan Yoon
elected to the National Academy of Engineering—the highest honor
provided to members of the engineering profession. Yoon arrived
at Virginia Tech in 1978 as a member of the College of
Engineering and is known internationally for his significant
contributions to the technology and science of mineral
processing. Yoon directs the Center for Advanced Separation
Technologies under the auspices of the Department of Energy. In
1980, Yoon and his Virginia Tech colleagues developed a
technology of using small air bubbles, known as microbubbles, to
produce clean coal from the coal fines discarded to waste ponds,
and is currently marketed by Metso Minerals and Eriez
Magnetics. He was also instrumental in helping develop a method
of removing water from fine coal and mineral fines, separating
impurities from kaolin clay, and an optical sensor for coal
analysis.
Ron Willis
joins AMC Consultants as coal group manager and principal
consultant and will be based in Brisbane. Willis’ expertise is
in coal mining, focusing on management and operations, including
strategic planning, business development and change management.
Operation experience includes pre-feasibility studies, contract
management and technical evaluation.
Mary L. Frontczak
and
Edward L. Sullivan
promoted to vice presidents and assistant general counsels for
Peabody Energy, St. Louis, MO. Frontczak will provide legal
counsel for Peabody’s Southwest and Colorado operations and will
serve as litigation counsel for the company. Sullivan will be
responsible for legal counsel of Peabody’s domestic commercial
transactions and operational matters.
Gregory H. Boyce,
chairman and chief executive officer, Peabody Energy, St. Louis,
MO, elected to the board of directors of Marathon Oil
Corporation. Boyce brings the perspective as the leader of the
world’s largest private-sector coal company, wide experience in
global energy markets and forceful advocate of clean coal
technologies to advance energy security and carbon solutions.
Marathon Oil is an integrated international energy company
engaged in exploration and production, oil sands, mining;
integrated gas; and refining, marketing and transportation.
Vince Gauci,
former MIM managing director, has joined the board of Runge,
mining consulting service and software company. Gauci has worked
in the mining industry for more than 30 years, and has had
positions with Gallipoli Mining and Liontown Resources.
Nick Edmunds
named director of mining for Europe/Africa at Parsons
Brinckerhoff (PB), a global infrastructure consulting,
engineering and construction management organization. Edmunds
will be responsible for combining the growth of PB’s mining
services with the development of radioactive waste management
services in the United Kingdom. His focus will be on
coal-related projects in Europe/Africa.
Laura Beverage
named chairperson of the Colorado Mining Association (CMA).
Beverage is a prominent mine safety attorney and a member of
Jackson Kelly PLLC. She chairs the firm’s Occupational Safety
and Health Practice Group. Beverage represents general industry
and mining clients in a variety of matters, including compliance
issues, policy, legislative and regulatory matters, civil and
criminal enforcement issues, accident investigation, and
discrimination claims on both state and federal levels.
Dr. Wolfgang Babel
named chief executive officer of Hirschmann Automation and
Control, Neckartenzlingen, and Lumberg Automation – Belden
Deutschland GmbH, Schalksmuhle. Dr. Babel succeeds
Reinhard Sitzmann
who will be concentrating on several supervisory board
appointments in the future. Dr. Babel studied electrical
engineering at the Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg
and later did doctorates at the Columbia Pacific University in
San Francisco and the Friedrich Alexander University.
Michael Reich
appointed chief executive of Minova International, replacing
Sandy Arbuthnot
who stepped down in January after some 10 years of service.
Arbuthnot will continue as an advisor through 2008. Reich’s
appointment followed the acquisition of Excel Mining Services by
Minova parent company Orica last year. Orica plans to merge
Minova and Excel under the Minova name.
James Woodward
has resigned as executive vice president and chief financial
officer from Joy Global after serving one year. It is expected
that
Jim Tate
will serve as acting chief financial officer, a current member
of the board of directors.
