When Exporting Becomes Importing
This year.
Next year. The year after. Pick one. Any one. It doesn’t really
matter but, assuredly, one of them will see the United States go
from a net exporter of coal to a net importer. From a million
tons or less a year to the mid 1980s, imported coal posted a
steady step-by-step increase from one million tons a year, to
two-to-three million tons and then, in 1993, when exported coal
tumbled from 102 million tons to 75 million tons, imported coal
more than doubled, from 3.8 million tons in 1992 to 8.2 million

to acquire prospecting rights for coal in South Africa in over
15 farms totaling over 20,500 hectares, located within the
Waterberg, Soutpansberg and Springbok flats coalfields.
