Ralph Waldo
Emerson* aside, if a man was to invent a better mousetrap, he
had better not expect any path beating to his door if he is
involved in the coal industry and if that door happens to be in
the state of Illinois; not even when that mousetrap is mandated
by state and federal laws, the lack of which threatens the very
existence of a large part of the underground mining industry...>>more

Zachwieja Jr. “As an
industry and as a nation, we must solve our problems with solid
engineering and not political finger pointing,” Zachwieja said.
“The last few years have been troublesome for the industry and I
have seen my share of problems; but the fact remains, coal
miners are unique, tough and determined and we will survive
these issues..>>more

reclamation enhances water
Land and stream disturbance
by coal mining is not always a bad thing. The West Virginia
Division of Mining and Reclamation has what it calls “mining
mitigation collections” to finance environmental improvements. Completed in mid-October
was a four-mile stretch of the Little Coal River from a project
financed by Coal River Energy in collaboration with the State
Department of Environmental Protection’s Mining and Reclamation
Division. The work enhanced the current, or water ripple effect
