True, the Earth is witnessing a warming trend. We all recognize
the planet has gone through a great many warming and cooling
cycles over millions of years.
The question is man’s influence on this warming cycle. Is
man-made carbon dioxide causing this current warming? Or is the
warming a function of other natural conditions, such as the sun
and the clouds? That’s where the science is uncertain...>>more

Pritchard Mining is a happy place to work. Situated at scenic

Bob Ellis: VP Operations
Kanawha Eagle Coal
When the 340 miners, prep plant employees and loading dock
workers at Kanawha Eagle Coal want to talk to management, they
go to Bob Ellis.
His official title is vice president of operations, but the fact
is, he’s management personified. Following the 44-year-old
around is like following Billy in the cartoon, “Family Circus,”
because he’s everywhere: in and out of the company’s offices,
bath houses and mines, greeting employees, asking about their
kids, quizzing them about production and cracking jokes...>>more
CNX Gas Makes Big Impact on
Energy Need
About 15 years ago the leadership of Consol Energy Inc. would
have likely laughed at the thought that the coalbed methane gas
they had been venting into the atmosphere for several years
would become a $4 billion annual business with annual revenue in
excess of $400 million, but not Claude D. Morgan, vice president
of CNX Gas Corporation based in Bluefield, West Virginia...>>more
Electrical Connections
One of the most incredible things about the Bluefield Coal Show
that essentially sets it apart from its predecessor show, the
Southern Appalachian Industrial Exhibit, is the abundance of
coal industry equipment available for personal inspection.
Charlie Peters, general chairman of the Bluefield Coal Show
since its modern reincarnation in 1976, has often said that the
success of the first show came from the fact that show
organizers were able to talk a mine machinery manufacturer into
bringing a continuous miner to the show...>>more

the great
game of mushball
Only an octogenarian who grew up in the heart of the bituminous
coal country will remember mushball. Simply defined, it is the
name of a game and the ball used on playground ballfields.
Player positions and base layouts are like a typical baseball
diamond. The distances between bases and the pitching mound to
the home plate are shorter and the ball is delivered to the
batter underhanded...>>more
road to
peabrook
It is an evening in late June and the sun is going down on a
little stretch of U.S. 23 about three miles south of Pikeville.
But for the two flags, the old green trailer might go unnoticed
sitting atop a dirt driveway against the hillside in the deep
shade of scrub pine and hemlock. A faded relic of the
single-wide breed, its only other pretense at yard art is a
wooden wheelbarrow of long-dead geraniums. On the left, its
tall mast anchored deep in crab grass flies the star spangled
banner. On the right, as prominently displayed, waves the stars
and bars of the Confederacy. The door of the home is standing
open, and from within comes the sound of country music...>>more
women's
mining coalition
In an
industry almost exclusively male, a small group of women have
quietly been making a difference in getting legislative focus on
mining issues. It began
in 1993 when a determined group of concerned women working
primarily in the metal mining sector journeyed to Washington,
D.C., to address legislators about changes to the Mining Law of
1872...>>more
