NEWLAND SETS RECORD WITH BUCYRUS EQUIPMENT
Using a Bucyrus EL3000 shearer, Xstrata's Newlands Northern
underground mine
-- in the Bowen Basin, Queensland, Australia -- set a new
Australian annual production record in 2009. At 9,159,490 US
tons, the record is an increase of 9.1 percent on the previous
high of 8,408,038 US tons set in 2007 by Xstrata's Beltana in
NSW, also operating with a Bucyrus EL3000 shearer. In May 2009,
Newlands Northern Mine also set a new Australian monthly
productivity record of 961,891 tons. The mine further improved
on this by extracting 1,016,794 tons in October 2009.
Productivity at the Newlands Northern Mine has been steadily
increasing in the four years since a Bucyrus EL3000 shearer was
installed in 2006. The 8.3 million tons extracted in 2009 is
getting close to double the 4.49 million tons mined in the first
year of operation.
The Newlands Northern Mine longwall is completely
Bucyrus-equipped. The longwall works with an EL3000 shearer
with total installed power of 1,590 kW including cutting power
of 2x650 kW. The shearer is fully automation-capable and works
off a Jumbotrack 2000 rackbar haulage system with haulage power
of 2x125 kW. The longwall is further equipped with 181 two-leg
roof supports with a yield load of 913 tons and a working range
of 3-5 meters, automated with Bucyrus's PM 4 electrohydraulic
control system.
The face conveyor for the 312 m longwall is a Bucyrus PF 5/1342
with a 48 mm x 144/160 combi-chain and a 3 x 855 kW CST drives.
The 375 kW PF 4/1532 beam stage loader and 400 kW SK 11/18 coal
crusher are also supplied by Bucyrus.
The Newlands mine produces export thermal coal from underground
and open-cut operations in an extremely competitive
environment. It is located 130 km west of the coastal center of
Mackay and 171 km by rail from the Abbot Point coal terminal.
MineSite Technologies' Impact Digital Network has been approved
by MSHA
for use in underground coal mines, meeting all requirements for
communications and tracking under the MINER Act 2006. The
Wireless Network Switches that are an integral part of the
digital backbone also act as readers for RFID tags which are
carried by miners underground. MST's MinePhone is in the final
stages of approval. Visit
